Building Regional Housing Solutions Together

Southern Regional Funders Gathering Recap written by guest blogger Latala Hodges from The Harvest Foundation

On a beautiful October morning, leaders from across the southern region of the state came together at Hamlet Vineyards in Bassett for the Southern Regional Funders Gathering, hosted by Virginia Funders Network and co-sponsored by The Harvest Foundation and the Danville Regional Foundation. With the fall colors as a backdrop, the conversation turned to one of our region’s biggest opportunities: housing.

This regional gathering brought together partners serving Danville, Pittsylvania County, Caswell County (NC), Martinsville, and Henry County. It was a chance to connect, share ideas, and talk honestly about what’s working, and what’s not, when it comes to building homes that meet the needs of our workforce and families.

The panel discussion, moderated by VFN Member, Natalie Davis with Locus featured Ken Gillie (City of Danville), Sean Campbell (West Piedmont Planning District Commission), Donald Paredez (Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority), and Eric Payne (City of Martinsville Economic Development Authority).

Each shared unique perspectives about how their communities are tackling housing challenges. While we share similar issues across the region, every community faces its own set of circumstances, and that’s exactly why these conversations matter.

Panelists touched on everything from local building codes and infrastructure needs to the importance of reliable data and regional coordination. They also discussed creating a regular housing collaborative to help align efforts across localities. With major economic developments like the Berry Hill mega site coming online and building out Commonwealth Crossing, the group agreed that housing is critical at every level.

Later in the program, Deb Markley from Locus led small-group discussions to explore regional opportunities, capital needs, and who else needs to be part of the conversation. The energy in the room was contagious! People were ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work. A sign-up sheet quickly filled with names of those eager to stay involved in a new regional housing collaborative.

With the moderated panel and group discussions came a sense of urgency and collaboration. Everyone who took the time to gather all shared the same thought: The time to act is now.

As conversations continued over lunch, it was clear that when we come together as neighbors and partners, we can make real progress. The gathering at Hamlet Vineyards was a positive outcome of a region moving forward, toward a future where everyone has a place to call home, and every community has a chance to thrive.
