Since launching in 2020, the Virginia Funders Network (VFN) has built a strong foundation for impact. As one member put it, the network’s value lies in “being part of something much larger and more impactful than our organization alone.” More than a network, VFN is a movement for stronger, healthier, and more equitable communities across Virginia.
As we enter our next stage of development, three interconnected pillars are shaping the path forward—pillars that, together, amplify our impact.
Convening Power
Members identify convening as VFN’s greatest strength. By bringing diverse voices together, we spark new ideas, share knowledge, and strengthen relationships. From timely virtual learning sessions to Regional Funder Gatherings (RFGs) to our annual conference, these opportunities equip members with the insights and connections they need to advance their missions in communities across Virginia.
Policy and Advocacy
The second pillar focuses on building VFN’s voice in policy and advocacy. What does it mean to represent philanthropy in Virginia? It means ensuring members receive timely policy updates, telling powerful stories of philanthropy’s role and impact, and supporting both collective and individual advocacy efforts. It also means deepening cross-sector partnerships with government, business, and nonprofits to invest in Virginia’s future.
Collective Impact
The third pillar, collective impact, is already showing results. Members are co-funding initiatives that expand philanthropy’s reach and deliver change at scale. A recent example: a collaborative investment that enabled Cardinal News to hire a health reporter, bringing vital local news and information to communities that need it most. These kinds of joint efforts demonstrate what’s possible when we act together.
Looking Ahead
These three pillars—convening, advocacy, and collective impact—are not stand-alone efforts. They are interconnected forces that strengthen one another, positioning VFN as a collaborative community dedicated to advancing opportunity for all who call Virginia home.
As we refine and lean into these pillars, VFN will continue to deliver the greatest value to its members—and to the communities they serve.
