Thanks to VFN’s partnership with Dominion Energy, close to 20 VFN Members had the unique opportunity to get an up-close look at the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, the first offshore wind project in the nation owned by an electric utility company. Last week, participants set out by boat traveling 26 miles off the Virginia Beach shore to visit the first two 600 foot tall pilot turbines—a glimpse of the 176 turbines that will make up this landmark renewable energy initiative.
The first-hand experience offered funders an opportunity to learn and ask questions about the project through an informational session led by Brittany Woodson, External Affairs Representative at Dominion. The presentation sparked important conversations about the intersection of sustainability, community impact, and innovation – conversations that will continue to inform and impact philanthropy across the Commonwealth.
During the tour, participants not only had an opportunity to network but also learn about how Dominion is not only investing in clean energy, but also taking steps to protect marine wildlife and build a skilled local workforce to support the project’s long-term impact.
“It was a powerful opportunity to explore how United Way of South Hampton Roads can connect and collaborate with our community partners on workforce development programs,” Jason Inge, Director of Community Investment shared on LinkedIn.
Sherry Norquist, Executive Director of Community Engagement and Impact at Sentara Health also shared, “Dominion Energy is bolstering the economy with a combination of jobs and science just 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach.”

Once completed in 2026, the 2.6-gigawatt project will generate zero-carbon energy for approximately 660,000 homes across Virginia. An economic-impact analysis by the Hampton Roads Alliance estimates the seven-year impact of the project will amount to roughly $57 million in pay and benefits and $143 million in economic output, generating $5 million in state and local tax revenue.
