Collaboratives

Collaborative Initiatives

VFN Funder Members believe in the transformational power of collaboration. By working and learning together, philanthropy can more effectively advance opportunities for Virginia communities and the people who live in them. VFN serves as the backbone for learning, co-funding collaboratives, and coordinated action.

Funding Collaboratives

Virginia Mental Health Access Program

Twenty Members throughout Virginia invested in the Virginia Mental Health Access Program (VMAP) to deliver training developed by the REACH Institute. The program helps to address the state’s shortage of pediatric mental health specialists by training primary care providers in mental health care. One hundred twenty-eight providers encompassing all regions of the state have been trained in this intensive course. Now, thousands of Virginia’s pediatric patients have immediate access to providers who are better prepared to address their mental health needs.

Cardinal News Health Reporter

Five VFN Members from across the Commonwealth joined together to resource a health reporter position at Cardinal News, a nonprofit news organization serving Southern and Southwest Virginia. The health reporter has published numerous stories shedding light on health-related issues impacting rural communities throughout the state.

RVA Health Racial/Ethnic Equity Funders

Funded by four Members in the Greater Richmond MSA, health funders, local health departments, and health providers are working over a 12-month period to identify 3 priorities for grantmaking to address inequities in health outcomes in the region with a goal to scale impact through collective efforts.

Learning Collaboratives

Impact Investing

Early in VFN’s history, members expressed interest in learning more about using social and financial capital differently to stretch their grantmaking dollars. At the same time, it was becoming more common for foundations to be asked to work at the intersection of community and economic development. What started as VFN’s Impact Investing Networking Group with structured virtual and conference learning sessions, has now morphed into a more informal “Office Hours” gathering to share real-time experience of addressing critical community opportunities and challenges with flexible, non-traditional capital.

A core group of Members facilitates the planning and discussion for 2-3 virtual Office Hours meetings and annual conference session each year. The goal is to cultivate a space where people can learn, and for those who are ready to engage, they can connect with other Members, including the small planning team, for a deeper dive and best practices.

Learning Collaboratives

Program Officers

With funding by the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation, an affinity group for program officers was launched at the 2024 annual conference. The group meets quarterly for an hour-long virtual “Coffee & Conversation”. Members of the affinity group identify the topics and facilitate the planning. Additional resources are made available to Members, including a listserv dedicated to Program Officers.

Learning Collaboratives

Finance Staff

An affinity group for Members interested in learning more about finance topics was launched at the 2025 annual conference. While created for finance staff, the group is open to any Member. Additional resources are made available to Members including a listserv dedicated to Finance Officers.

Across Philanthropy Serving Organizations (PSOs)
