Expanding Support for Family Foundations and Donor Advised Funds: A New Learning Journey Begins

As part of VFN’s continued commitment to strengthening services and resources for our family foundation and donor advised fund (DAF) Members, we are excited to announce the launch of a new Family-Focused Learning opportunity. VFN is partnering directly with the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) to provide philanthropic families with specialized educational resources, webinars, and tools. This partnership gives VFN members access to NCFP’s “Fundamentals of Family Philanthropy” webinar series.

Building on the strong engagement and positive feedback from our role based learning session at this year’s conference, this new initiative represents an important expansion of VFN’s offerings for philanthropic families and DAF leaders. We are especially grateful to the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation for their generous grant support, which is helping make this opportunity possible.

Susan Hallett, Schaberg’s Director of Philanthropy, shared these thoughts with VFN:

“Family philanthropy is uniquely rewarding and complex. Addressing community challenges while honoring a family’s values and philanthropic goals requires both strategy and adaptability. In my career, one of the most valuable resources has been learning alongside colleagues who understand the opportunities and challenges of this work. That is why I’m excited that VFN is expanding its offerings for family foundation and DAF VFN Members. This new learning series will provide a valuable space to learn from peers, exchange ideas, and draw on NCFP’s deep expertise—strengthening our work and our impact.”

Monthly Learning Opportunities for Family and DAF Leaders

Family foundation and DAF staff, trustees, and family members will have access to a series of monthly virtual learning sessions designed and facilitated by NCFP, the nation’s leading resource for family philanthropy. Our first session will be:

Join us July 14 at 2 PM to hear from philanthropic families who are exploring the art and opportunity of generational transitions and multigenerational leadership in ways that allow all family members to meaningfully contribute and lead together.

Drawing on research, we’ll look at how to build governance structures, clarify roles, and honor legacy while inviting innovation and creating shared leadership pathways that reflect evolving values and capacities.

Whether you’re just beginning to plan for succession or are actively engaging young adults in your philanthropy, this session offers examples and frameworks to strengthen intergenerational trust, align purpose across generations, and write the next chapter of your family’s philanthropic legacy together.

More Ways to Connect and Learn

These webinars are just one part of VFN’s growing suite of resources for family philanthropists.

We are also launching a Family-Focused Listserv to foster peer learning, share timely resources, and strengthen connections among family foundation and DAF members across Virginia. Individuals affiliated with Family Foundation and DAF member organizations will receive a welcome email soon. Participation is optional, and recipients may opt out at any time.

In addition, VFN is developing a dedicated Family Philanthropy Resource Hub within the Member Portal. This new online space will feature curated tools, articles, recordings, and other resources designed specifically to support family foundations and donor advised funds at every stage of their philanthropic journey.

We look forward to building a vibrant community of learning, connection, and shared leadership for family philanthropists across the Commonwealth.
