2024 Regional Funders Gathering Wrap Up

A recap by Patte Koval, VFN’s Director of Member Engagement & Learning

The 2024 Regional Funders Gatherings (RFG) occurred between July and November.  More than 200 funders and partners came together across eight of our nine regions to explore ways to amplify the power of philanthropy in addressing the pressing needs of Virginia communities. For many regions and foundations, it was their third year hosting! We are grateful for all our hosts and their willingness to share their time and resources in crafting an agenda unique to their region. Click here, for a complete listing of our 2024 hosts.

Although the agenda topics varied greatly, there were common themes. Several RFGs took advantage of VFN’s recent geographic alignment with GO Virginia by inviting regional council representatives to speak on public investments through GO Virginia’s economic development grantmaking program and how these investments impact Virginia communities.

One gathering explored philanthropy’s role in policy and advocacy to address community priorities, which led to 2 follow-up calls on potential collaborative steps toward housing affordability and equitable mental health opportunities for youth. Housing affordability continues to be VFN members’ highest priority and was discussed in some capacity at almost all gatherings.

At RFGs hosted in our more rural regions, discussions focused on the unique challenges rural funders face. Information shared was consistent with the findings from a pre-conference survey and a rural focus group held at this year’s conference. VFN’s Advisory Board recently affirmed that VFN needs to develop a rural strategy to support those members. More information about this work, including pre-conference learning and a dedicated conference session, will be announced in early 2025.
